Who is God?

Wow! That's a pretty huge question. It seems like so many people have different opinions, how will you know which one is true?

Some people believe that whatever you believe is true - is true. After all, a loving God would allow you to believe any good thing you want. Wouldn't He? Well, lets take a look at some of the main beliefs about God and see. Lets explore what different philosophies have been constructed regarding God and His involvement on planet earth.

1. Pantheism
God exists in and through everything in the universe, and is one with the universe. God is part of everything; He is in the trees, in me, in you, in everything.

2. Polytheism
There are many gods. You have a god, I have a god … whatever you think is god ... IS

The Pantheist and the Polytheist believe in a god or gods that have chosen to not become personally involved in the lives of people. Their god set creation in motion and, for the most part, left the rest to us. God remains unconcerned or unavailable to help us.

3. Atheism
There is no God. The universe happened by chance. There is no design.

4. Agnostic
It is not possible to know if there is a God or not. God may exist, but who could know for sure?

5. Deist
Believes in one God who created the universe but has left it since it's beginnings. God set the world in motion like a wind-up toy and does not get involved. The Atheist believes there is no god. The Agnostic doesn't really know therefore is unwilling or unable to commit and the Deist believes that there is a god but that god is not actively involved

6. Theist
God exists and is involved with creation (actively involved). God is not only out there, He cares about His creation (personally involved) and desires to have a continuing active participation in it.

Let's look at the Theist view from a biblical perspective. God always claimed to be actively involved in everyone's life, regardless of their belief regarding Him.

In the Gospel of John, chapter 1, it is clear that God created all things.
"In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it."
If you read on you will discover that John was writing about Jesus Christ and that Jesus created all things with a purpose. When that purpose was compromised by sin He became actively involved by becoming flesh and living with us. During His life He was the visible reflection of God. If you want to see God look at Jesus.
"He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God - children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth …

From the fullness of His grace we have all received one blessing after another."
If you can believe that the Bible is true, if you can believe that the historical Jesus really existed and if you would agree that 2,000 years of devotion to those beliefs has endured all attempts to discredit and prove them a fraud then you may truly begin to see just how big God really is. It is truly amazing that He wants us to know and understand Him just as we are known and understood by Him.

Anyone who says that any belief in God is the right belief must ignore the contradictory aspects found in the differing views. On the surface a belief in "many beliefs" may seem rational and kind but it is, in fact, illogical.

God will not be anything people want. Can you make the sun shine by believing it should? Can you make the rain stop by deciding that you've had enough? Is it possible to add more hours to the day just because you need them? Of course not. The natural laws that God built into His creation help us understand the divine laws that reflect His character. God is constant, He is never changing and He is the same yesterday, today and forever. HEBREWS 13:8

The only logical conclusion is the belief in one God and only one God. The God who is actively and personally involved and is anxious for you to know Him/

So what's the difference between a Theist and a Christian?

The difference between a Theist and a Christian is the belief that Jesus Christ is God and that He personally became involved in what He actively watches over. Jesus became personally involved by dealing with the sins of mankind.

"For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him." JOHN 3:16-17
Now. if you believe yourself to be more than a Theist, that you are a Christian, then there is one more piece of God to examine.

Jesus made an offer to twelve men that He repeats every minute of every day. He asked them to be His disciples. A disciple is a pupil, a student, a follower, someone who learns from another with the purpose of continuing in that person's beliefs.

Jesus told his disciples that He would become personally involved in their life and actively help them each and every day.
Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father." So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir. Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods. But now that you know God-- or rather are known by God … GALATIANS 4:1-9
A disciple has more than a belief in Jesus. A disciple knows that faith in Jesus allows them to see how truly wonderful God is. That knowledge causes them to want to grow in an active, personal relationship everyday.

On our own we cannot know if God is real, let alone who He is and what He might mean to us. But through Jesus Christ we are able to know God, because Jesus is God. The God who is too big to be grasped by man became a man so that we would have a point of reference for our faith.

You can acknowledge that you believe Jesus Christ is God and that you want Him to be the Lord of your life by telling Him through prayer.
God knows your heart and is not so concerned with your words as He is with the attitude of your heart. You can tell Him in your own words or use the prayer we've provided for you.
Jesus, I believe that you are God and I know that I need you. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. I give You the control of my life and I invite you to be personally and actively involved in my whole life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be. AMEN
PRAISE JESUS! Welcome to the family of God! The Bible says that angels rejoice in Heaven whenever one person repents and declares Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. You're ready to begin your new life in Christ. It's a great life so pursue with all you have and all you are.

Now, send me an email at andrew@jesusway.org or go to our "contact us page" and leave me a note about your decision to follow Jesus.  I want to rejoice with you and pray for you that God would walk with you every step of the way in your new faith.  Also find a good Bible believing Church so you can grow and be encouraged in your new relationship with Jesus.  How exciting!!!

God bless you,

Pastor Andrew H. Rogers
